Local Planning for Broadband Infrastructure Tuesday, September 16, 2008 • 5:00 p.m. In Illinois, the governor's Broadband Deployment Council has developed recommendations for growing Internet infrastructure to ensure the future economic vitality of the state. These recommendations raise a number of questions for local planners. Ronald Thomas, AICP, and Layton Olson, co-chairs of the Illinois Broadband Deployment Council, will discuss how broadband right-of-way planning works in the physical and virtual world. They will also speculate on how broadband speeds could redefine the built environment.
Employer-Assisted Housing Tuesday, October 14, 2008 • 5:00 p.m. Employer-Assisted Housing (EAH) in Illinois has proven itself to be a meaningful strategy for leveraging employer dollars as well as leadership from both the private and public sectors. With Illinois among the top 10 states for residential foreclosures, most planners agree that public sector resources are insufficient to address the demand for quality affordable housing. In both expensive high job growth communities and more affordable redeveloping communities, resources are tight, community acceptance is limited, and political leadership around housing is very challenging. Still, there's been tremendous headway on housing policy at the state and local level in the last ten years, when Illinois' first ever state housing policy was created, transformed into a Comprehensive Housing Plan and codified into law. Various pieces of legislation have passed to support this new Plan, and dozens of local leaders have introduced new policies, development proposals which advance both state and local housing goals. Robin Snyderman will share how EAH has worked for employers and communities of all types and sizes, and she will discuss how policymakers have leveraged this investment to support greater affordable and workforce housing policies and proposals.
Food Systems Planning Tuesday, November 11, 2008 • 5:00 p.m. For planners there is no better time than now to start thinking about where our food comes from, beginning with the farm and ending on our plates. With a global food crisis gaining momentum what role can planners play in both preservation and improvement of the food system? Lynn Peemoeller, co-chair of the Chicago Food Policy Advisory Council, will discuss the environmental, health, social justice, and policy implications of food, and she will share her perspective on how APA's Community and Regional Food Policy Guide informs the planner's role in the complex food system.
