April 6, 2007 New York City Congressman Nadler Honored by APA as Legislator of the Year WASHINGTON, DC — Long-time U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) has remained an important partner to state and local governments, helping to safeguard their ability to make important community-driven solutions to boost economic prosperity and advance comprehensive redevelopment initiatives. As an active member of the House Judiciary Committee, for example, he was a key figure in the opposition of H.R. 4128, the Private Property Rights Protection Act of 2005. He argued that the bill's hasty drafting, aimed at limiting the ability of local governments to take property for economic development purposes, had a fundamentally flawed structure. For these and other efforts, the American Planning Association has named Representative Nadler recipient of one of two 2007 Legislator of the Year awards. Highlights of his accomplishments are featured in the April 2007 issue of Planning magazine, and the New York City congressman will be honored at a ceremony later this year. Representative Nadler has served the interests of New York's diverse Eighth Congressional district since 1992. He is a member of the prominent House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties. Both in his current role and as a New York State Assembly member from 1976 to 1992, Representative Nadler has worked with community organizations to improve housing conditions and mass transit projects. His transportation expertise helped to solve traffic and transit problems in New York, and he has worked to relieve congestion by expanding bus and ferry routes and improving subway accessibility in the city and region. "Jerry Nadler deserves our thanks for his relentless and creative support for much-needed transportation solutions to move people and goods. He has always led the way for genuine community planning in New York. Congressman Nadler has been a valiant leader in the struggle to safeguard civil rights for all Americans," said APA's New York Metro Chapter President Ethel Sheffer, AICP. Representative Nadler believes that affordable housing is a basic need in any community, and he has been a vocal advocate for preserving existing affordable housing stock and maintaining federal funding for programs including Section 8 and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS.
