National Design Professionals Summit on Infrastructure Investment Monday, October 20, 2008 In conjunction with APA's annual Federal Policy & Program Briefing, APA will bring together design professionals from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Institute of Architects for a one-day summit on national infrastructure issues. Leadership from all three organizations will kick off the day with a roundtable discussion on the infrastructure challenges currently facing our country. Speakers include U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer and representatives of allied organizations who will bring their significant expertise to issues such as transportation policy, financing infrastructure investment, and global competitiveness. APA Task Force Launched The summit also marks the launch of APA's Infrastructure Task Force, headed by Past President David Siegel, AICP; President Robert Hunter, FAICP; and President-elect Bruce Knight, FAICP. The task force steering committee will include the chairs of six sub-committees, focused on the topics of transportation, water, energy, technology and telecommunications, public facilities and green infrastructure. The summit will kick off a series of task force meetings designed to assess infrastructure challenges in each of APA's regions around the country. The task force will report its initial findings at the 2009 National Planning Conference in Minneapolis. The second phase of the planned three-year undertaking will be to host nationwide town hall meetings to gather input from members across the country on recommendations to address the nation's infrastructure problems. A report on the findings is scheduled to be drafted before the 2009 Federal Policy & Program Briefing in Washington, D.C., with continuing review taking place that winter. At the 2010 National Planning Conference in New Orleans, APA hopes to be able to present a final report, along with a variety of tools and training sessions to better assist planners, policy makers, and communities in addressing infrastructure issues.
